The Music Blog 42 EP Of The Year

2019 has been a strong year for the local scene and the EPs released this year shows the local scene is in a good place for the years ahead.

Below is a very condensed round of this year’s Top 10 EPs as voted for by you! The votes were very very close on this one!

10. Too Cool Kid – The Candidate
Cambridgeshire’s Too Cool Kid released an ambitious effort this year with an EP based around a fictional political, inspired by the sounds of Bowie and Radiohead.

9. GrassRoof – GUYAKA
Cambridge Band Competition winners GrassRoof blew everyone away with their mind-bending psych-rock EP GUYAKA, their finest work to date.

8. WRECK – Dusty Knees
Emerging from a growing Norwich scene, surf-punk heroes WRECK released one of the best debut EPs this year with Lost My Weed and Six Hours In becoming instant favourites.

7. Deep City – CIRCUIT
Indie-pop quartet Deep City released the cohesive CIRCUIT which features some of their most technical tracks to date including The 1975-inspired thoughtofmind. and indie-dance hit The Box.

6. Caswell – Blindside
Breakout star Caswell has had a stormer of a year after winning a national competition to support Ed Sheeran in Ipswich in August. Blindside is further proof she is a star in the making.

5. Gaffa Tape Sandy – Family Mammal
The long-awaited second EP from Gaffa Tape Sandy earned national praise on release for their memorable garage-rock hits like Headlights, Kill The Chord and new single My Desperate House.

4. The Daze – Stares Like Stone
Newcomers to the local scene, punk foursome The Daze released their awesome debut EP under the stewardship of Queens Road Studio. The band are ones to watch in 2020.

3. KYANOS – Lost In Blue
The follow-up to 2017’s Elevator to Japan, KYANOS fused jazz, psychedelia and alternative rock together to create one of the most ambitious and successful EPs of 2019.

2. SubStation – The Yellow One
Another band from the Queens Road Studio, SubStation’s debut EP made a lasting impression on the local scene with deep, thoughtful lyrics and interesting instrumentation.

The Music Blog 42 EP of the Year is…
1. Salvador – Salvador

The self-titled debut EP from Framlingham’s Salvador propelled the indie-pop band to be known names within the local scene within a matter of months. Tracks like Ordinary Love and Gum Disease shows the band at their best, making intense and emotive tracks. Having had extensive radio play on BBC Introducing Suffolk, the band were picked to support Ed Sheeran in August at Chantry Park. Salvador will be looking to build on this 2020 with more new music and live performances.

The Music Blog 42 Track of the Year 2019

2019 has been another great year for local talent around East Anglia and this has been proven with the brilliant tracks released by these artists over the past twelve months.

The tracks below were voted for by you and make up this year’s top 10.

10. FLEAS – Dogs
This exciting new punk band from Bury St Edmunds unleashed Dogs in early 2019, earning praise from many within the local scene. Since the release, they’ve played several Washing Machine nights and are tipped to go far in the 2020 edition of BurySOUND.

9. Lemondaze – Neon Ballroom
Cambridge’s premier shoegaze band released their debut single early last month and it instantly became a favourite with us here. The track really captures the essence of their live performances, with the swirling guitars and ethereal vocals being a real hit.

8. Gabby Rivers – Game
The long-awaited debut single from the talented Gabby Rivers came in October after a year of winning BurySOUND and headlining a stage at Latitude. The tightly-written Game really whets the appetite for more music with an EP reportedly coming in 2020.

7. Basement Strippers – Mind Reader
The Bedfordshire rockers delivered the goods in August with their best track to date: Mind Reader. Its fearsome riffs and powerful lyrics really set the precedent for their success this year which has seen them support Sarpa Salpa and Tom Lumley. 2020 is their year.

6. Kelodown – Breakin’ Off
Another debut single in the Top 10 with every right to be here. Breakin’ Off is an exciting classic rock track with a modern twist, led by the flawless vocals from Aleks Michalewicz. The band are looking to release more new music in 2020, and we can’t wait for it.

5. KYANOS – Sunrise
A staple of their live sets, Sunrise is a technical masterpiece with elements of psychedelia and jazz combining into one of the best tracks the local scene has to offer. This year has seen them release an EP, two singles and play a session for BBC Introducing.

4. PET NEEDS – I Don’t Wanna Be Only Happy
Essex punk rockers PET NEEDS have had an incredible year, with a really strong collection of tracks released with I Don’t Wanna Be Only Happy being the pick of the bunch. Other highlights include being championed by Frank Turner at Camden Rocks Festival.

3. Underline The Sky – Miss Identity
Everyone’s favourite pop-rock band released this catchy riff-laden track in July this year, as well as playing at BardFest and PimJam Festival. Catch them headline The Hunter Club in Bury on Saturday 25th January when they break #theburycurse.

2. Gaffa Tape Sandy – Headlights
Gaffa Tape Sandy have gone from strength to strength this year, with a highlight of their year being the release of Headlights. The track’s powerful message of mental health awareness resonated with crowds up and down the country during their support slots for Lady Bird and Skeggs.

Sages of the Subway – 88′

Cambridgeshire newcomers Sages of the Subway’s 88′ is one of the best indie-rock tracks we’ve heard locally since we began in 2017. With incredibly funky instrumentals and a chorus which will be stuck in your head for weeks, Sages of the Subway are worthy winners of this year’s vote. The four-piece will be looking to capitalise on their successes this year after making the final of the Cambridge Band Competition.

The NMG Awards 2019

Gaffa Tape Sandy and Riviera were the big winners at this year’s NMG Awards held once again at The Apex in Bury St Edmunds.

Bury St Edmunds-based trio Gaffa Tape Sandy deservedly walked away with the Breakout award, after a year which has seen them support Skeggs, Indoor Pets, play festivals abroad and release their second EP to much acclaim.

Winners of the 18 and Under band category Riviera were inducted into the NMG Hall of Fame alongside acts like 4th Labyrinth, who earlier brought the house down with two great tracks, Sages of the Subway and Camisayo.

Former winners Hollowstar and Ellie Dixon wowed the crowd with two flawless performances, sandwiched inbetween award wins for GABBY in the 18 and Under Solo category, The Glitter Shop for Alternative and Among The Citizens for Indie.

In the public votes, The Hunter Club walked away with the Best Small Venue award, whilst Silence and Company won the inaugural Track of 2019 trophy. Jake Day picked up the Best Producer gong, and the Audience Choice winners for 2019 were once again Pink Lemonade.

Young prospects Among The Citizens and Riviera also played live sets which went down really well in the venue. Upcoming band Salvador won the Breakthrough award after recently supporting Ed Sheeran at Chantry Park.

The Extons picked up the Best Rock award literally from the floor, after their trophy was dropped moments before announcing the winner, alongside Amethysts who appeared via video-link to accept the Electronic and Urban award.

The Male and Female Solo winners were first time winners Dan Bond and Sophie Winter, also the Folk, Country and Roots winners being Elizabeth & Jameson.

The night closed with a trademark performance from Gaffa Tape Sandy who formed possibly the first ever mosh pit at an awards night.

EP Review: Gaffa Tape Sandy – Family Mammal

After months of hard work in the studio, Gaffa Tape Sandy have finally let their second EP Family Mammal loose to critical acclaim.

Their instant hit Beehive is unleashed on us right from the get-go, with the band’s proven formula of catchy hooks and razor-sharp instrumentation winning over fans only one song in.

My Desperate House is a boisterous number, a classic full throttle garage rock track brought to the fore by the raspy vocals of Kim Jarvis.

When it comes to songwriting there’s really no competition when it comes to this trio, and Meat Head and Headlights prove they are really at the top of the game. Meat Head‘s intense, passionate message of equality and the mental health awareness in Headlights shows why the band resonates with so many people.

Dinner Jacket shows off a more gentle side to their sound, with Catherine Lindley-Nelson’s vocals really shining through as the track rounds off with a thunderous finish.

One of the four tracks released before the EP was So Dry, a track which was inspired by “the people who really, really annoy us” but packs an absolutely killer chorus.

Ever since they starting touring this track back in 2017, Turnstile has been a fan favourite and it’s great to see it finally getting a studio release. Drummer Robin Francis sets the pace of the track with ease whilst the playful dual vocals combine perfectly throughout.

Rounding off the EP is the vociferous Kill The Chord, it’s rock’n’roll sound packs an almighty punch with Lindley-Nelson’s vocals shining once again.

Every track is as infectious as the last “banging tune” and it’s hard not to be begging for more after this. Gaffa Tape Sandy are one of the most exciting bands out there, and after this showing it won’t be long until they hit the big time. Oh, and I’d hate to have to write a setlist for them now.

Track Review: Gaffa Tape Sandy – Headlights

After their jaw-droppingly outstanding performance at The Hunter Club on Saturday, Gaffa Tape Sandy triumphantly return with the anthemic Headlights and two exciting announcements.

Having performed at festivals around the UK and countries further afield like Iceland and Germany, the raucous trio from Bury St Edmunds are back with Headlights which marks the start of a new era for Kim, Catherine and Robin having just signed to indie label Alcopop! Records.

Headlights was released last Wednesday (20th March) and it’s already an instant classic which sticks to their well-oiled formula of playful dual vocals, intensely powerful riffs and catchy hooks. The band want the track to be “an open embrace to anyone who finds it hard to talk about their mental health”.

The track is the first offering off of the band’s upcoming EP which is set to be released in the summer, just in time for their festival appearances, and it’s an EP that is much anticipated and could be the catalyst for even more success.

TMB42 Track of the Year 2018 results

For the past few months, YOU have been voting for your favourite East Anglian track of 2018. Now it’s time to reveal this year’s top ten and winners.

10. The Glitter Shop – Tonic
Grunge-pop trio The Glitter Shop have been making a name for themselves around the region this year with their electric live performances. The soothing harmonies and delicate instrumentals on the high-tempo track makes Tonic easily their best track to date. Catch them at The Smokehouse in Ipswich this Saturday.

9. The Catch – Tie Dye
When Tie Dye was released in February, it signalled a change in The Catch’s musical style. Since then, the teenage trio have captivated everyone with their heavy instrumentals which are at the fore-front of this pulsating track. Big things are expected of The Catch as we head into 2019.

8. The Baskervilles – Blood In My Mouth
The Ipswich music scene is currently thriving with the likes of Bessie Turner dazzling national audiences, but rockers The Baskervilles are currently making waves of their own with the flawlessly catchy Blood In My Mouth. The band recently had the opportunity to play Reading&Leeds this year, and they’ll be looking to build on that next year.

7. Basement Strippers – Blindfold
One of this year’s biggest success stories are the Basement Strippers from Bedford. With the release of their debut EP under their belt, lead track Blindfold is the song that has gained them plaudits with their clever songwriting and heavy rock sounds. The band have since played in various locations such as Bury St Edmunds, St Albans and London with more gigs scheduled for next year already. 

6. Gaffa Tape Sandy – Meat Head
After grabbing the number one spot last year with the triumphant Beehive, Gaffa Tape Sandy returned with an almighty bang in 2018 with the empowering anthem Meat Head. Their rampant style combined with the powerful female vocals on the tracks proves why they’ve played festivals like Latitude, Iceland Airwaves and Truck this year. The trio have  new music on the brink of release and there’s no doubt they’ll be at the top of our list again next year.

5. Pink Lemonade – Space Girl
Another success story from the area this year have been feel-good trio Pink Lemonade. The trio burst onto the scene in the summer with several festival appearances as well as the release of their infectiously popular debut single Space Girl. Their pop-punk sensibilities has captured a lot of people’s attention which has since seen them walk away with an NMG Award. BurySOUND is up next for the girls along with a lot more gigs around the area.

4. Influx of Insanity – Violet
The Cambridgeshire duo have taken the local music scene by storm this year having won BurySOUND and the Cambridge Band Competition at the start of 2018, and also releasing their debut EP in October. The atmospheric guitar riffs and unique vocals makes Violet the best track from the duo so far in what looks to be a very promising few years for the band. We can’t wait to hear what else they have up their sleeves.

The top three have the chance to play one of our ‘The Music Blog 42 Presents…’ nights at The Constitutional Club in Bury St Edmunds in 2019 whenever suits them best! We also had a little chat with each of them!

3. Tundra – Swimming Shorts

Swimming Shorts is arguably your best song yet, what was the inspiration behind the track?
I (Elliot Booth, bassist) began writing Swimming Shorts in the corner of one of my lessons at college on an acoustic guitar. I’d seen SuperGlu the weekend before for the first time and it somehow inspired me to come up with the intro to the song. It was the easiest song to come up with lyrics for because it just flowed so well. We were all in a gloomy place as it was the end of Winter and we were waiting for summer to come around, so writing an upbeat song for the Summer was a big thing for us and I think we did okay with it. 
Just as we finished writing the song we lost two school friends in a car accident and found an alternate meaning to the song that we hadn’t thought of. We slightly changed some lyrics and it became what it is today.
I think we all want people to listen to the song and think of the happy times, even if right now isn’t so positive, it’s not to say tomorrow won’t be. The song is all about looking forward and seeing something better than now

It’s been an awesome year for Tundra, what would you say has been your highlight of 2018?
Obviously we start with supporting Marmozets (at the Cambridge Junction), especially as it was on my birthday, that was one of the most surreal things I think that has ever happened to us. We didn’t quite understand what was going on until it ended.
Playing the Apex as the BurySound final headliner in March was probably the most fun I’ve ever had on a stage and the invasion was something I’ll keep with me forever! Anyone who came up on stage thank you for making it so awesome! Releasing Life’s A Beach was awesome as it was something that we spent so much time and effort on and listening back to them really makes us so proud because they aren’t half bad. The Bury Fringe All Dayer was mental. It was so much fun and just a massive joke with all the Royal Family masks flying about, it was lovely to warm everyone up for Gaffa Tape Sandy too as well as we hadn’t played with them for over a year! Supporting Pirate Joe at Norwich Arts Centre was also a highlight, the show had sold out a week before which was unheard of for us. It was an amazing gig filled with no one that we knew in a venue that we had never played before which made it so much more amazing! Finally supporting Milk Teeth in Gloucester was great as we hadn’t really ventured much further than London and Norwich but now that we have the taste for it, we want to do it more! However supporting Milk Teeth was awesome and the venue was a sick restaurant in the middle of nowhere which made it that little bit more magical!

After the release of your EP Life’s a Beach in April, do you have any plans on releasing any more music next year?
MUSIC THAT MAY BE COMING OUT NEXT YEAR? We can let the cat out the bag and say that, YES, we will be releasing some more music next year however we don’t know when, but we do have some plans that are in the making and hopefully 2019 will be the year we can get the boat ROCKING!!!! (If anyone knows how we can play at Latitude, that we would be eternally grateful thanks bye)

2. The Fifths – They Should

2018 has seen the band release four new singles, would you say They Should is your strongest one yet?
They Should was our last single of 2018 and was released alongside Trampoline. We definitely feel that They Should has much more of an up tempo, bouncy feel, especially when compared to our first release Chance It. This has meant that it has always had a warm reception when performed live! We finished our first ever gig with it back in January and since then it has always been one that we’ve kept the audience waiting to hear.

‘They Should’ has drawn comparisons with the likes of Bloc Party and the Arctic Monkeys. Would you say these are inspirations when writing new music?
I can see why you’d say that as this song started (and mostly ended) as a clumsy Banquet rip off! Arctic Monkeys have been my most listened to artist for three years straight (‘Sheffield Indie’ came up on my fourth most listened to genre during my first month of Spotify) so they’ll always play a part even if I were to never listen to them again. I’m not sure about Bloc Party, the stuff we’ve been working on is quite far removed from that now.

You guys are competing in BurySOUND next year, what else have you got planned for 2019?
Without giving too much away, we have definitely got some big plans and goals for 2019 and have already started working towards those. We shall be doing our best to keep the momentum that we have taken from 2018 and build it up further through 2019 with brand new tunes being performed and recorded from January.

ENTERLUDE – BRITISH DREAM

Congratulations on winning Track of the Year with British Dream! What was the songwriting process behind the track?
Thank you! Back in April 2017 we had just started to move on from playing covers and started trying to write songs. The chorus of British Dream were lyrics that I had playing over and over in my head in the shower and then one night I actually decided to have a go at writing the song and putting my ideas down. Most of the structure, lyrics and composition were done in one night (with the help of some alcohol). It is such a basic song, with a really simple progression of only four chords, one verse repeated and a lead guitar riff over the top of it, which was inspired by Mr Brightside by The Killers.

The track has been well-received all around the local music scene, what do you think has made it become such a hit?
The simplicity of it. The pacing makes it really upbeat and strong whereas the lyrics are more sombre and sad making it seem bittersweet. The guitar riff and bass are the real driving forces behind the melody, which is easy to pick up on and remember. With the mixture of a classic rock line up with synthesisers, we like to think gives us a unique sound that you don’t really hear in this day and age especially in East Anglia.

It’s been a strong year for the band having released your debut EP and playing lots of local shows, but what’s been your standout moment from 2018?
Our slot at the Apex at the end of August was great, playing on such a large stage and being treated so professionally was pretty good. We also sold all of our physical copies of our EP which we had just released about a week before digitally so that was amazing. Our set at BurySound Heat One this year was also amazing, despite not getting through we had a sold out audience at the Hunter Club and the energy in the room was huge.

As we all get set to welcome in 2019, what are Enterlude’s plans for next year?
We’re definitely writing more songs over the next few months and should hopefully have a few released early into the year. All of our songs have been recorded on GarageBand in various kitchens and front rooms, so it would be nice to rent out a proper recording space in the future. As four of the five of us are at University at the moment it makes it hard for playing live and rehearsing, but hopefully we can get a few gigs in the Summer and Winter when we’re all together again and settled down a bit. We’ve played the Hunter Club and The Apex, so naturally headlining Glastonbury is next, but if that’s not possible we would love to play at more venues in and around Bury, such as The Constitutional Club, Cambridge and Ipswich.

Gaffa Tape Sandy @ The Hunter Club

An evening of great rock music at The Hunter Club was rounded off with a blockbuster set from Gaffa Tape Sandy.

Bad Stone opened the night with their expansive progressive rock sounds, entertaining an already large crowd. Their extraordinarily loud guitar riffs reverberated around the room treating everyone to tracks like Magic Caravan. A great way to start the night.

Psych-punk newcomers Egyptian Blue’s set was easily one of the best we’ve seen for a while. Their instantly memorable collection of hits like the NME-endorsed To Be Felt and the inspiring Cut Me A Hole won over a lot of people on the night. These guys are definitely a band you need to watch out for, because we’re tipping them for big things!

Having released their debut album Husk a matter of week ago, the loveable Goldblume trio’s whistle-stop tour of the county arrived at The Hunter Club with a performance full of uptempo classics like Husk and Razor, and more reflective tracks including Alice. The band’s tight-knit set proved why they are so well-liked around the East of England.

Another band who released their debut album recently were Fightmilk who owned the stage with their fun-filled pop punk back catalogue. Though the lead singer admitted to having a “very very bad sore throat”, the band were not phased by it at at all and wowed the packed crowd. The foursome played many tracks from their debut album Not With That Attitude including Four Star Hotel and How You Move On.

With the venue completely sold out, Gaffa Tape Sandy steamrolled onto the stage pounding out crowd favourites Water Bottle and Pink Neck/Train Wreck before treating the partisan crowd to a few new tracks, notably the awesome Turnstile which has been a staple at all of their recent live shows. 

Tracks like Transylvania and Manager meant that the moshing and crowd surfing ensued before a rare live outing for the track Collarbones calmed down proceedings.

Latest single Meat Head and traditional set closer Beehive rounded off a memorable night for the trio. Having just returned from Iceland Airwaves and with a huge 2019 ahead of them, seeing Gaffa Tape Sandy in venues as small as this could be a rarity in the future

Track Review: Gaffa Tape Sandy – Meat Head

Bury St Edmunds trio Gaffa Tape Sandy deliver a track with an important message wrapped up in their passionate brand of garage rock in Meat Head.

Ahead of a busy summer festival schedule which sees Kim, Catherine and Robin take in sets at Latitude, Truck and dates abroad in Germany and Iceland, the trio have released Meat Head which is aimed towards “reckless attitudes that exacerbate rape culture”.

Meat Head is an instant hit starting off with the pounding instrumentals which soon grows into their usual fun, raucous style. In a change to usual proceedings, Catherine takes centre stage with a powerful vocal performance, which is complimented in the chorus by Kim’s vicious howls making the listening experience an enjoyable and thoughtful one.

There’s no doubt that this is one of Gaffa Tape Sandy’s catchiest tracks to date and already aligns well with tracks like Pink Neck/Train Wreck and the frantic Beehive in their outstanding live performances.

Having featured in NME’S Essential 100 for 2018 and various dates up and down the UK this summer, there’s no stopping the musical juggernaut that are Gaffa Tape Sandy, a band who are well and truly showing their potential. And Meat Head proves it.

Bury Fringe All-Dayer 2018 @ The Hunter Club, BSE

An incredible array of talent was on display at The Hunter Club yesterday (Saturday 5th May) for the 7th annual Bury Fringe All-Dayer, headlined by the rampant Gaffa Tape Sandy.

The day was brilliantly started with bands from Queens Road Rock School, Queen Dogs showed vast confidence beyond the years playing covers of One Way or Another and a great cover of Transmission by Joy Division, whilst The Daze played some original tracks alongside covers of Use Somebody and Blitzkrieg Bop. Both bands went down really well with the crows, and it really was a great way to kick off the day.

Opening The Magic Carpet Stage was rising star Noah Evans, another performer in the same age range as the bands before, but still showing off his incredible talents playing tracks from his debut EP See It Through which is now on Spotify. These three acts really shows that the Bury St Edmunds area is abundant with young talent, and it’s so promising to see this!

Going back to the Main Hall, alt-rocker Sophie Mahon and her backing band wowed the crowd with a truly awesome 80’s influenced-set featuring crowd favourite 2bf which is a really really brilliant track. Turning 180 degrees, it was then Blue Mean Eyes turn to shine and they certainly did. Tearing through tracks like Brixton Shrug, the trio proved during their set that they are set for big things, especially considering that they have new music on it’s way!

Enterlude brought their indie-synth sound to the Washing Machine stage, playing the phenomenal tracks Hurt Yourself and British Dream whilst also showing off new track Dancing With The Devil. With a support slot for Bessie Turner coming up for the band, they’ll just get better and better. After their set, Cambridge’s Lemondaze played a blinder of a set, with their stunning shoegaze sound really connecting with the large crowd. They are definitely a band to keep an eye out for, really promising stuff!

Our first visit to the Rock Against Racism Stage, run by Toonteen’s Joe Weaver, saw us see the brilliant BAILEY. Starting his set with his debut single The Future, his elevating-pop sound really shone through as his set went on, he has new tracks on the way and we can’t wait to hear them. Next up on stage was the delightful Matt Hammond who was a really interesting act to watch. It was lovely to sit and admire his guitar work, his intricate guitar melodies were truly impressive, especially during the wonderful Skylines.

A late replacement after the Interesting Times Gang sadly pulled out, KULK played two sets during the day. Heavy rock is their speciality, especially when they’re playing the bloody insane tracks Fix Me and Toxic. Every time I see these, they just get better and better, and to get that sound from only two people is just jaw-dropping! After seeing them support DRUIDS in January, it was really nice to see Stealing Signs back with their sweet alternative rock, playing one of my personal favourite local tracks You Will Be and many more. Every time these lads perform they put on a great show, we can’t wait to see them at Homegrown Festival!

Rounding off the first half of the all-dayer were the wonderful trio of The Glitter Shop. They may have only played a handful of gigs together since forming, but as soon as they stepped on stage, you would have thought they would have been playing together for years. Not only do their studio releases Fizz and Sleep sound great live, the other tracks on their set like Throwing Apples and Call The Bank topped off with their frantic energy on stage proves why they are one of the most exciting bands to have come out of the local scene in years.

After a much-needed food break, Kelodown and their hard rock sound really got the crowd moving proving why they made to the final of BurySound this year. With more gigs under their belt, the band will get even better, especially if they write tracks as good as Carpet Burn and Occupational HazardThe Baby Seals made their Hunter Club debut with a formidable set filled with really fun tracks with bonkers names like My Labia Is Lopsided But I Don’t Mind and Nipple Hair. Hopefully they play there again soon, because they were ace!

Playing before the headliners on the Rock Against Racism stage were The Catch with one  of the best sets of the entire day. Their new tracks sound really really impressive especially the thumping Can You Feel It? and Hindsight, which really compliment the rest of their packed set which include crowd favourite Tie Dye and new single Sort It Out. Quality as always from one of the best bands in Bury.

SIAH played a long over-due set on Chris’s Stage, with their post-punk hits Susie Smokes and A French Girl sounding really great as always. Let’s hope that they release some new music before the year is out because it’s desperately needed! Fresh off the back of a European tour, Fightmilk were another band returning to the Hunter Club with their epic pop-punk tracks like Pity Party, making the release of their debut album hotly anticipated!

Co-headlining the Rock Against Racism Stage were indie-rock legends The Baskervilles. The band have recently released new track Blood In My Mouth which sounds truly majestic live, alongside their set-opener Kalashnikov and all-round belter Death Of A Pop Song. We really can’t wait to hear what the foursome release next because they’re one of the best indie rock groups around locally. The other band co-headlining the RAR stage were 2017 BurySOUND finalists Goldblume, a commanding set from the god-like trio who played Razor, from their RSD vinyl release, which sounded utterly sublime. Their bold stage presence was a joy to watch and was the perfect way to close the stage. Two real highlights of the day.

After releasing their second EP Life’s A Beach only last week, Tundra brought the summer vibes to Chris’s Stage with their glorious surf-punk sounds. They played the EP in full with Walking Stick and Swimming Shorts sounding absolutely huge with their awesome riffs and thundering drums. It’s no doubt that Tundra are a ‘live band’, and when it comes to playing their trademark song Vacation, you know that the crowd are going to go absolutely mental. And they certainly did. A really memorable set that led into the overall headliners set impeccably.

So, now onto the last act of the night, the absolutely AMAZING Gaffa Tape Sandy. The band had already played in Leeds earlier on in the day, but they saved their A-game for their hometown crowd bursting into the frantic Transylvania and the snappy Water Bottle with moshpits already forming in the packed crowd. The trio played a mix of old and new with the well-received Smart Dressed Guy and L’Appel du Vide still sounding so exciting and fresh. New tracks Turnstile and Meathead went down a treat with the crowd too, with the fun instrumentals and perfect vocals really packing a punch, the latter is being released soon, WATCH THIS SPACE! And by the way Manager is still class, probably the most underrated track from their debut EP Spring Killing. They closed their set with the ever-present Beehive, inviting the absolute legend Seymour Quigley to crowd surf whilst they played it. With several festival dates this summer lined up, there’s no doubt that they are one of the most exciting bands in the UK at the moment. Go and see them if you ever have the chance!

Vinyl Review: You Flexi Thing Vol.4 (RSD 18)

Loved by Record Store Day goers and local music fans, R*E*P*E*A*T Records have announced the fourth instalment to their You Flexi Thing catalogue, titled Look Sharp, with tracks from loveable trios Gaffa Tape Sandy and Goldblume.

Gaffa Tape Sandy’s Smart Dressed Guy, their debut single released in 2016, sums up their reputable style perfectly: frantic, energetic and exhilarating. Described by the NME as “giddily frantic, high-octane hyper rock ‘n’ roll”, the trio from Bury St Edmunds will be tearing up festival stages across the country this summer.

Cambridge’s Goldblume treat us to a sneak peak to material from their upcoming untitled debut album with the track Razor, a great rock track which shows so much promise and makes the album so hotly anticipated. They too have festival dates over the summer so go check them out!

Look Sharp: You Flexi Thing Vol 4 will be available from participating indie record stores, with remaining copies available from the R*E*P*E*A*T Bandcamp and from the bands at gigs.
