TMB42 Track of the Year 2018 results

For the past few months, YOU have been voting for your favourite East Anglian track of 2018. Now it’s time to reveal this year’s top ten and winners.

10. The Glitter Shop – Tonic
Grunge-pop trio The Glitter Shop have been making a name for themselves around the region this year with their electric live performances. The soothing harmonies and delicate instrumentals on the high-tempo track makes Tonic easily their best track to date. Catch them at The Smokehouse in Ipswich this Saturday.

9. The Catch – Tie Dye
When Tie Dye was released in February, it signalled a change in The Catch’s musical style. Since then, the teenage trio have captivated everyone with their heavy instrumentals which are at the fore-front of this pulsating track. Big things are expected of The Catch as we head into 2019.

8. The Baskervilles – Blood In My Mouth
The Ipswich music scene is currently thriving with the likes of Bessie Turner dazzling national audiences, but rockers The Baskervilles are currently making waves of their own with the flawlessly catchy Blood In My Mouth. The band recently had the opportunity to play Reading&Leeds this year, and they’ll be looking to build on that next year.

7. Basement Strippers – Blindfold
One of this year’s biggest success stories are the Basement Strippers from Bedford. With the release of their debut EP under their belt, lead track Blindfold is the song that has gained them plaudits with their clever songwriting and heavy rock sounds. The band have since played in various locations such as Bury St Edmunds, St Albans and London with more gigs scheduled for next year already. 

6. Gaffa Tape Sandy – Meat Head
After grabbing the number one spot last year with the triumphant Beehive, Gaffa Tape Sandy returned with an almighty bang in 2018 with the empowering anthem Meat Head. Their rampant style combined with the powerful female vocals on the tracks proves why they’ve played festivals like Latitude, Iceland Airwaves and Truck this year. The trio have  new music on the brink of release and there’s no doubt they’ll be at the top of our list again next year.

5. Pink Lemonade – Space Girl
Another success story from the area this year have been feel-good trio Pink Lemonade. The trio burst onto the scene in the summer with several festival appearances as well as the release of their infectiously popular debut single Space Girl. Their pop-punk sensibilities has captured a lot of people’s attention which has since seen them walk away with an NMG Award. BurySOUND is up next for the girls along with a lot more gigs around the area.

4. Influx of Insanity – Violet
The Cambridgeshire duo have taken the local music scene by storm this year having won BurySOUND and the Cambridge Band Competition at the start of 2018, and also releasing their debut EP in October. The atmospheric guitar riffs and unique vocals makes Violet the best track from the duo so far in what looks to be a very promising few years for the band. We can’t wait to hear what else they have up their sleeves.

3. Tundra – Swimming Shorts

Swimming Shorts is arguably your best song yet, what was the inspiration behind the track?
I (Elliot Booth, bassist) began writing Swimming Shorts in the corner of one of my lessons at college on an acoustic guitar. I’d seen SuperGlu the weekend before for the first time and it somehow inspired me to come up with the intro to the song. It was the easiest song to come up with lyrics for because it just flowed so well. We were all in a gloomy place as it was the end of Winter and we were waiting for summer to come around, so writing an upbeat song for the Summer was a big thing for us and I think we did okay with it. 
Just as we finished writing the song we lost two school friends in a car accident and found an alternate meaning to the song that we hadn’t thought of. We slightly changed some lyrics and it became what it is today.
I think we all want people to listen to the song and think of the happy times, even if right now isn’t so positive, it’s not to say tomorrow won’t be. The song is all about looking forward and seeing something better than now

It’s been an awesome year for Tundra, what would you say has been your highlight of 2018?
Obviously we start with supporting Marmozets (at the Cambridge Junction), especially as it was on my birthday, that was one of the most surreal things I think that has ever happened to us. We didn’t quite understand what was going on until it ended.
Playing the Apex as the BurySound final headliner in March was probably the most fun I’ve ever had on a stage and the invasion was something I’ll keep with me forever! Anyone who came up on stage thank you for making it so awesome! Releasing Life’s A Beach was awesome as it was something that we spent so much time and effort on and listening back to them really makes us so proud because they aren’t half bad. The Bury Fringe All Dayer was mental. It was so much fun and just a massive joke with all the Royal Family masks flying about, it was lovely to warm everyone up for Gaffa Tape Sandy too as well as we hadn’t played with them for over a year! Supporting Pirate Joe at Norwich Arts Centre was also a highlight, the show had sold out a week before which was unheard of for us. It was an amazing gig filled with no one that we knew in a venue that we had never played before which made it so much more amazing! Finally supporting Milk Teeth in Gloucester was great as we hadn’t really ventured much further than London and Norwich but now that we have the taste for it, we want to do it more! However supporting Milk Teeth was awesome and the venue was a sick restaurant in the middle of nowhere which made it that little bit more magical!

After the release of your EP Life’s a Beach in April, do you have any plans on releasing any more music next year?
MUSIC THAT MAY BE COMING OUT NEXT YEAR? We can let the cat out the bag and say that, YES, we will be releasing some more music next year however we don’t know when, but we do have some plans that are in the making and hopefully 2019 will be the year we can get the boat ROCKING!!!! (If anyone knows how we can play at Latitude, that we would be eternally grateful thanks bye)

2. The Fifths – They Should

2018 has seen the band release four new singles, would you say They Should is your strongest one yet?
They Should was our last single of 2018 and was released alongside Trampoline. We definitely feel that They Should has much more of an up tempo, bouncy feel, especially when compared to our first release Chance It. This has meant that it has always had a warm reception when performed live! We finished our first ever gig with it back in January and since then it has always been one that we’ve kept the audience waiting to hear.

‘They Should’ has drawn comparisons with the likes of Bloc Party and the Arctic Monkeys. Would you say these are inspirations when writing new music?
I can see why you’d say that as this song started (and mostly ended) as a clumsy Banquet rip off! Arctic Monkeys have been my most listened to artist for three years straight (‘Sheffield Indie’ came up on my fourth most listened to genre during my first month of Spotify) so they’ll always play a part even if I were to never listen to them again. I’m not sure about Bloc Party, the stuff we’ve been working on is quite far removed from that now.

You guys are competing in BurySOUND next year, what else have you got planned for 2019?
Without giving too much away, we have definitely got some big plans and goals for 2019 and have already started working towards those. We shall be doing our best to keep the momentum that we have taken from 2018 and build it up further through 2019 with brand new tunes being performed and recorded from January.

ENTERLUDE – BRITISH DREAM

Congratulations on winning Track of the Year with British Dream! What was the songwriting process behind the track?
Thank you! Back in April 2017 we had just started to move on from playing covers and started trying to write songs. The chorus of British Dream were lyrics that I had playing over and over in my head in the shower and then one night I actually decided to have a go at writing the song and putting my ideas down. Most of the structure, lyrics and composition were done in one night (with the help of some alcohol). It is such a basic song, with a really simple progression of only four chords, one verse repeated and a lead guitar riff over the top of it, which was inspired by Mr Brightside by The Killers.

The track has been well-received all around the local music scene, what do you think has made it become such a hit?
The simplicity of it. The pacing makes it really upbeat and strong whereas the lyrics are more sombre and sad making it seem bittersweet. The guitar riff and bass are the real driving forces behind the melody, which is easy to pick up on and remember. With the mixture of a classic rock line up with synthesisers, we like to think gives us a unique sound that you don’t really hear in this day and age especially in East Anglia.

It’s been a strong year for the band having released your debut EP and playing lots of local shows, but what’s been your standout moment from 2018?
Our slot at the Apex at the end of August was great, playing on such a large stage and being treated so professionally was pretty good. We also sold all of our physical copies of our EP which we had just released about a week before digitally so that was amazing. Our set at BurySound Heat One this year was also amazing, despite not getting through we had a sold out audience at the Hunter Club and the energy in the room was huge.

As we all get set to welcome in 2019, what are Enterlude’s plans for next year?
We’re definitely writing more songs over the next few months and should hopefully have a few released early into the year. All of our songs have been recorded on GarageBand in various kitchens and front rooms, so it would be nice to rent out a proper recording space in the future. As four of the five of us are at University at the moment it makes it hard for playing live and rehearsing, but hopefully we can get a few gigs in the Summer and Winter when we’re all together again and settled down a bit. We’ve played the Hunter Club and The Apex, so naturally headlining Glastonbury is next, but if that’s not possible we would love to play at more venues in and around Bury, such as The Constitutional Club, Cambridge and Ipswich.

EP Review: The Catch – How It Seems

One of the best indie bands in the area, The Catch are currently making a name for themselves with their ferocious live performances and awesome track releases. With their new EP How It Seems, they certainly don’t disappoint.

The EP follows on from the release of their two recent singles Tie Dye and Sort It Out which have both shaped the sound of their new work. The trio’s sound has really grown over the past year with more emphasis placed on heavy guitar riffs which are prominent in the opening single Hindsight which also features their trademark catchy chorus.

Drop The Act follows directly on from Hindsight, and it’s more of the same. An awesome indie rock track that instantly pulls you in with incredibly tight instrumentals to open the track and arguably some of the band’s best lyrics to date. The drop towards the end of the track is unexpected but it could be a real crowd pleaser at the live shows.

The title track How It Seems is a track which shows The Catch in a different light with a more gentle approach to their instrumentals and an emotional vocal performance. How It Seems is needed to differentiate from the powerful rock from before, though the second half of the track is the part of the song.

Recently released as a teaser single, Know You Won’t Try finishes the EP off with a bang. Their Bring Me The Horizon and Biffy Clyro influences really shine through on this track with even more intensely sharp guitar riffs and instrumentals.

These four tracks from the trio signals a change in their musical direction. More riffs, a heavier sound and honest lyrics are just three of the reasons why The Catch are one of the best local bands around. This EP is an essential listen.

KYANOS @ The Hunter Club

A first hometown headline show from KYANOS rounded off another awesome Washing Machine night at The Hunter Club on Saturday (3rd November).

The first band of the night were the Ipswich-based Groff, who brought their fun indie pop-like sound to the Hunter Club stage for the first time. Their tracks like the upbeat Beaches kicked off the night well. More gigs together will see Groff blossom into a powerful indie outfit.

Loved across the region especially in their hometown of Cambridge, Lemondaze smashed their set with their unique shoegaze-grunge sound which reverberated around the room. Their passion for the music really shone through with their intense guitar-driven instrumentals and powerful inimitable vocals.

The Catch were on their usual top form with a rock-heavy set full of their best tracks and songs from their new How It Seems EP. The trio are one of the best live acts in the region and this showed with their polished set which featured hits like Sort It Out and Vexed. The set ended with the high-tempo thrasher Tie Dye leaving the whole room wanting more.

Having only formed late last year, The Glitter Shop returned to the Hunter Club stage with their sleek grunge-pop. Their live performances are energetic and powerful which really connects with any crowd they play to. Throughout their short set, the crowd sang back every word of their tracks like debut single Fizz and the anthemic Moon. More tracks are being written and released, keep an eye out in 2019!

The time had come for KYANOS to grace the stage for the first time as headliners. The psych-groove foursome had the room in the palm of their hands, throwing out Hawaiian leis for all and making everyone dance along to their flawless tracks. Though their setlist remained largely the same as previous sets this year, the band were on top form throughout with their incredibly tight instrumentals and great performances of tracks like Thunder In JapanSunrise and Dopamine. This set rounds off an awesome year for group after acclaim from NME and winning the BurySOUND Rising Star award.

19/10 – Best In The East Spotify playlist

The past two weeks have seen an incredible amount of new releases from local artists, and here’s our summary of the tracks that you really need to hear!

SOPHIE MAHON – BLACK TIE
After the release of her spellbinding single 2bf and various live performances around the area, Sophie Mahon finally released her debut EP Xenon Nights – Dusk a few weeks ago and it’s awesome. Black Tie is the EP opener, with its synth-laden instrumentals instantly drawing you into the 80’s-inspired art rock anthem. Mahon plays the Bury Fringe Christmas Party on 22nd December at the Constitutional Club.

THE CATCH – KNOW YOU WON’T TRY
With the release of their EP imminent, the lads from The Catch have given us a little taste of what’s to come with latest single Know You Won’t Try proving again why they are one of the best young bands in East Anglia. The track is a more toned down affair compared to previously released tracks Tie Dye and Sort It Out, but again they’ve smashed it out of the park with their infectious lyrics and hard instrumentals.

HOLLOWSTAR – LET YOU DOWN
Arguably Cambridge’s best rock export since Mallory Knox, the ferocious Hollowstar are back again with another teaser in the buildup to the release of their debut album. Let You Down instantly draws you in with an electrifying guitar riff which constantly roams throughout the three minute track. The band are heading out on tour in the next few weeks, head over to their socials for more information.

BESSIE TURNER – NINO
Bessie Turner has definitely made a name for herself this year with headlining festival slots at Latitude and Reading&Leeds and the release of her beautiful debut EP 22:22. Nino is the latest instalment on Turner’s ever-growing discography, showcasing her gorgeous vocals over dreamy indie instrumentals, a style which has seen her touted as a ‘superstar in the making’ by BBC Introducing.

AMONG THE CITIZENS – PRETEND TO BE IN LOVE
Pretend To Be In Love is the latest release from Among The Citizens, a band who have really come of age over the past year. With two EPs, two singles released and an NMG Award already in the bag, it’s no wonder why they are tipped for big things. The title track from their new EP is a Two Door Cinema Club-esque indie pop belter with an incredibly catchy sing-a-long chorus. They play The Hunter Club in Bury St Edmunds tomorrow night (6:15pm)

THE GLITTER SHOP – CALL THE BANK
Although Call The Bank is a b-side to the soothing Tonic, this track is an absolute banger. Call The Bank is a staple of their enigmatic live performances which have wowed audiences in Norwich and Cambridge most recently. The track is a bit different to what’s been released previously from the trio as guitarist Barny Cutter takes lead vocals. The Glitter Shop play The Hunter Club 3rd November, be there!

SHYER – THE ONLY CURE
Having recently won the indie category at the recent NMG Awards, punchy four-piece rockers Shyer released the triumphant The Only Cure a matter of weeks ago. The simplistic but riveting guitar riff which weaves throughout the track combines nicely with the emotional vocals that makes this easily one of our favourite tracks of the past few months.

FRANKO FRAIZE – STOP ME (FEATURING ALEX JOSEPH)
The finale to his ear-catching EP Lights and Colour, Stop Me shows Franko Fraize at his very best. Fraize teams up with long-term collaborator Alex Joseph (2017’s Side By Side) to produce an epic UK rap track destined to hit your playlists as soon as you listen. The rest of his EP features the heartfelt Queen of Hearts and summer bop Let It Go. It’s well worth a listen!

June’s The Fiver @ Cambridge Junction

June’s edition of The Fiver saw a very strong line-up of six great local bands play at Cambridge Junction.

A band who are no strangers to the Junction stage are rock duo Influx of Insanity, having won the Cambridge Band Competition there a few months ago. Since seeing them for the first time in January it’s fair to say the boys have really grown in confidence and tonight proved it with a professional set and getting the crowd to interact during songs. At such a young age, Influx of Insanity are the most exciting band emerging out of Cambridge at the moment.

Making their Cambridge Junction debut were pop-punk trio ASBESTØS off the back of playing around the Cambridge gig circuit the past few months. They recently released their new EP Monochrome and their set featured many songs from it, including the short and sweet Futue te Ipsum and crowd pleaser Liar Liar. It’s great to hear a band that has such a retro 00’s pop-punk sound to them, it’s exciting to see what the next year holds for them.

One band who we always love seeing are The Catch, a band who really captivated the crowd during their set. The trio played a slightly varied set to what they played at Homegrown Festival a week ago with a new track and Vexed thrown in for good measure. The energy from the band was a joy to watch, especially in soon-to-be released track Hindsight and the raucous Tie Dye. It’s always great to see a band have fun up on stage, and with The Catch turning heads at every gig they play, it won’t be long until we see them headline their own show.

Another group who made their Junction debut were Bedford’s Basement Strippers who are slowly making a name for themselves locally with their energetic set. The band announced tonight that their new EP will be released in September, and on tonight’s showing we can’t wait to hear it. The set featured tracks from their 2017 EP The Exotic Show, with the title track and Standing At The Bridge putting smiles on everyone’s faces. As a live band, you won’t see many better than Basement Strippers this year.

If you’re a fan of full-bodied indie rock then you’ll love Tantris who whipped the crowd into a frenzy during their set. In their songs you can really distinguish their influences which range from the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Two Door Cinema Club, especially in tracks like Alcoholic and Radioactive Girl, whilst also playing new material. A really tight-knit performance from Tantris.

Another band that competed in the Cambridge Band Competition were electro-rock quartet Lunar Echoes. Although they played in front of a slightly smaller crowd, this didn’t stop them producing a great performance which included the Cambridge 105 NMG Chart-stormer Stockholm Syndrome and ace track Neon. The band have recently been in the studio recording some new tunes, so watch this space!

Highlights of Homegrown Festival 2018

After two brilliant days at Homegrown Festival 2018, here’s our highlights of the brilliant weekend, although all of the bands were awesome!

The first act we saw at the Festival was the underrated talent Connor Adams. Hailing from  Ipswich, he released his first EP only a few weeks ago, and the songs from this sound pretty awesome live especially the title track Open My Eyes. Alongside the new tracks was an inspiring cover of The Chain by Fleetwood Mac which really set the tone of the weekend! A really great set to open up the festival.

Making their debut at Homegrown Festival were young duo Influx of Insanity, bringing their heavy prog-rock to the fields of Barrow. It’s been a phenomenal few months for Dom and Oli, having won BurySOUND and Cambridge Band Competition, and starting to recording new music for their upcoming EP. A slight change to their set list paid off with tracks like Scaffolded Minds and Envious Souls sounding better than ever.

Tom Lumley played his first of many festivals this summer, having confirmed a slot at Truck Festival a few days previously. Lumley has a knack of writing anthemic indie bangers, and his last single Skyhigh is one of many on his packed setlist. One of the highlights of the weekend was his passionate performance of yet-to-be released track Crawling, a track which shows off a heavier side to Lumley’s music but also proves that he is still one to watch in the Cambridge area.

After playing The Apex the night before, The Catch dropped in and played a stormer of a set featuring old favourites like Artist and Effort, but it’s the rock-influenced Sort It Out and fast-paced fan favourite Tie Dye that went down really well with the Saturday afternoon audience. The trio also played a few new tunes which you can expect to hear real soon. They play Cambridge Junction tomorrow night (15th June), be there!

Among The Citizens were another band who played at The Apex the night before, and here they delivered a set which proves why they are highly thought of in the region. Tracks like Curved Lips and Needy not only shows off the band’s versatility in their styles, but makes their set list even more varied alongside the heavier, guitar-driven tracks like their brilliant new single Mess In The Head.

Having seem them at the Bury Fringe All-Dayer, we were excited to see Blue Mean Eyes  and they definitely didn’t disappoint. They played songs from their 2017 EP Through The Mill like Brixton Shrug and our favourite Escapade whilst also teasing new material. After several line-up changes it seems like the trio have finally settled as a band, and it’s exciting to see how their sound develops over the following year.

One band who always goes down well with a crowd wherever they play are the psychedelic quarter KYANOS. Having won BurySOUND’s Rising Star award, they were given an early evening set which showed off their talents playing smooth instrumental tracks and the usual crowd pleasers like Thunder In Japan and So High. The band also teased new music to be released soon in the form of an EP, more news when we get it!

One of several artists at Homegrown who we hadn’t seen before was young rising star Gabby Rivers, and after this showing we can’t wait to see her again. Not only does she write some really awesome original tracks, Gabby also played some enjoyable covers like Portugal, The Man’s Feel It Still and Florence + The Machine’s Dog Days Are Over which had the crowd singing along. An inspiring talent at only 15 years old, definitely one to watch.

When it comes to energetic indie rock tunes, Fick As Fieves are the pick of the bunch. Deservedly, they co-headlined The Coastline Stage with an impressive light show throughout their fast-paced, catchy set. A moshpit formed in the crowd when the trio played tracks like English Weather and Wasteman, whilst new tracks from their debut EP Drift End like COL and Outstayed prove why they are one of the region’s finest live bands.  More new music could be on its way to your ears by the end of the year, watch this space!

Saturday’s epic day of music was closed by the funk-soul legends Stretch Soul Gang. Their epic hour-long set was full of original classics which made the whole field have a dance. Opening their set with latest single Open Up Your Eyes, the Gang kicked in to gear with their next single Hit The Deck, fun groover Poncho Villa and the always outstanding Sharks At The Wheel. One of our highlights of the whole festival was the performance of Ungrateful which featured a rare live outing from soul singer Steven Bamidele whose vocals complimented the flawless falsettos on the track. They closed their set on debut single Ain’t Got No Money, followed by a fireworks display to round off the day. Let’s hope they get invited back for the third year running next year!

We had a great time at our first Homegrown Festival, and we want to thank the organisers (especially Sara!) for their support, and for putting on an awesome weekend!

Bury Fringe All-Dayer 2018 @ The Hunter Club, BSE

An incredible array of talent was on display at The Hunter Club yesterday (Saturday 5th May) for the 7th annual Bury Fringe All-Dayer, headlined by the rampant Gaffa Tape Sandy.

The day was brilliantly started with bands from Queens Road Rock School, Queen Dogs showed vast confidence beyond the years playing covers of One Way or Another and a great cover of Transmission by Joy Division, whilst The Daze played some original tracks alongside covers of Use Somebody and Blitzkrieg Bop. Both bands went down really well with the crows, and it really was a great way to kick off the day.

Opening The Magic Carpet Stage was rising star Noah Evans, another performer in the same age range as the bands before, but still showing off his incredible talents playing tracks from his debut EP See It Through which is now on Spotify. These three acts really shows that the Bury St Edmunds area is abundant with young talent, and it’s so promising to see this!

Going back to the Main Hall, alt-rocker Sophie Mahon and her backing band wowed the crowd with a truly awesome 80’s influenced-set featuring crowd favourite 2bf which is a really really brilliant track. Turning 180 degrees, it was then Blue Mean Eyes turn to shine and they certainly did. Tearing through tracks like Brixton Shrug, the trio proved during their set that they are set for big things, especially considering that they have new music on it’s way!

Enterlude brought their indie-synth sound to the Washing Machine stage, playing the phenomenal tracks Hurt Yourself and British Dream whilst also showing off new track Dancing With The Devil. With a support slot for Bessie Turner coming up for the band, they’ll just get better and better. After their set, Cambridge’s Lemondaze played a blinder of a set, with their stunning shoegaze sound really connecting with the large crowd. They are definitely a band to keep an eye out for, really promising stuff!

Our first visit to the Rock Against Racism Stage, run by Toonteen’s Joe Weaver, saw us see the brilliant BAILEY. Starting his set with his debut single The Future, his elevating-pop sound really shone through as his set went on, he has new tracks on the way and we can’t wait to hear them. Next up on stage was the delightful Matt Hammond who was a really interesting act to watch. It was lovely to sit and admire his guitar work, his intricate guitar melodies were truly impressive, especially during the wonderful Skylines.

A late replacement after the Interesting Times Gang sadly pulled out, KULK played two sets during the day. Heavy rock is their speciality, especially when they’re playing the bloody insane tracks Fix Me and Toxic. Every time I see these, they just get better and better, and to get that sound from only two people is just jaw-dropping! After seeing them support DRUIDS in January, it was really nice to see Stealing Signs back with their sweet alternative rock, playing one of my personal favourite local tracks You Will Be and many more. Every time these lads perform they put on a great show, we can’t wait to see them at Homegrown Festival!

Rounding off the first half of the all-dayer were the wonderful trio of The Glitter Shop. They may have only played a handful of gigs together since forming, but as soon as they stepped on stage, you would have thought they would have been playing together for years. Not only do their studio releases Fizz and Sleep sound great live, the other tracks on their set like Throwing Apples and Call The Bank topped off with their frantic energy on stage proves why they are one of the most exciting bands to have come out of the local scene in years.

After a much-needed food break, Kelodown and their hard rock sound really got the crowd moving proving why they made to the final of BurySound this year. With more gigs under their belt, the band will get even better, especially if they write tracks as good as Carpet Burn and Occupational HazardThe Baby Seals made their Hunter Club debut with a formidable set filled with really fun tracks with bonkers names like My Labia Is Lopsided But I Don’t Mind and Nipple Hair. Hopefully they play there again soon, because they were ace!

Playing before the headliners on the Rock Against Racism stage were The Catch with one  of the best sets of the entire day. Their new tracks sound really really impressive especially the thumping Can You Feel It? and Hindsight, which really compliment the rest of their packed set which include crowd favourite Tie Dye and new single Sort It Out. Quality as always from one of the best bands in Bury.

SIAH played a long over-due set on Chris’s Stage, with their post-punk hits Susie Smokes and A French Girl sounding really great as always. Let’s hope that they release some new music before the year is out because it’s desperately needed! Fresh off the back of a European tour, Fightmilk were another band returning to the Hunter Club with their epic pop-punk tracks like Pity Party, making the release of their debut album hotly anticipated!

Co-headlining the Rock Against Racism Stage were indie-rock legends The Baskervilles. The band have recently released new track Blood In My Mouth which sounds truly majestic live, alongside their set-opener Kalashnikov and all-round belter Death Of A Pop Song. We really can’t wait to hear what the foursome release next because they’re one of the best indie rock groups around locally. The other band co-headlining the RAR stage were 2017 BurySOUND finalists Goldblume, a commanding set from the god-like trio who played Razor, from their RSD vinyl release, which sounded utterly sublime. Their bold stage presence was a joy to watch and was the perfect way to close the stage. Two real highlights of the day.

After releasing their second EP Life’s A Beach only last week, Tundra brought the summer vibes to Chris’s Stage with their glorious surf-punk sounds. They played the EP in full with Walking Stick and Swimming Shorts sounding absolutely huge with their awesome riffs and thundering drums. It’s no doubt that Tundra are a ‘live band’, and when it comes to playing their trademark song Vacation, you know that the crowd are going to go absolutely mental. And they certainly did. A really memorable set that led into the overall headliners set impeccably.

So, now onto the last act of the night, the absolutely AMAZING Gaffa Tape Sandy. The band had already played in Leeds earlier on in the day, but they saved their A-game for their hometown crowd bursting into the frantic Transylvania and the snappy Water Bottle with moshpits already forming in the packed crowd. The trio played a mix of old and new with the well-received Smart Dressed Guy and L’Appel du Vide still sounding so exciting and fresh. New tracks Turnstile and Meathead went down a treat with the crowd too, with the fun instrumentals and perfect vocals really packing a punch, the latter is being released soon, WATCH THIS SPACE! And by the way Manager is still class, probably the most underrated track from their debut EP Spring Killing. They closed their set with the ever-present Beehive, inviting the absolute legend Seymour Quigley to crowd surf whilst they played it. With several festival dates this summer lined up, there’s no doubt that they are one of the most exciting bands in the UK at the moment. Go and see them if you ever have the chance!

Track Review: The Catch – Sort It Out

In what is their second track release of 2018, The Catch prove why they are one of the most talked about bands in Bury St Edmunds with Sort It Out.

Sort It Out is slightly different to the track that they released in February, in the sense that Tie Dye was a huge indie rock banger, but the former has it’s own merits and shows the band’s versatility at writing great tracks in whatever style.

On first listen, you get a feel of their Bring Me The Horizon and Lower Than Atlantis influences with the hard guitar riffs which roam throughout the track, as well as the shared vocals of drummer Adam Levey and guitarist Eddie Allen giving the track a rougher edge to previous tracks that they’ve released before.

The Catch are playing various live dates over the coming months with shows at The Hunter Club, Cambridge Junction and Conservatoire East @ West Suffolk College. All the information is on their Facebook page, go check them out. They are a band you need to see live.

Sort It Out is a welcome addition to The Catch’s rapidly growing discography and with the band still relatively new to the scene in Bury St Edmunds, they are without a doubt a trio to keep an eye out for.

BurySOUND Heat 5 @ The Hunter Club, BSE

Cambridge’s Influx of Insanity were the winners of Heat 5 of BurySOUND at The Hunter Club on Friday (23rd February).

Abbey Green started the night off, proclaiming their set was going to be “half covers, half originals”. Their original tracks sounded decent and with more practice and evolving they’d be a pretty good acoustic duo!

The second band on were Influx of Insanity. Astonishingly these lads are only 13 and 14, and it’s even more impressive with the music they produce. Their brand of prog-rock won the crowd and judges over with great tracks like Envious Souls and Scaffolded Minds, not to forget the tight creative chemistry between them. The duo have so much potential, keep an eye out for their new music being released soon!

The hotly-tipped KULK have had a pretty good start to the year, with 6Music’s Steve Lamacq dubbing them ‘Stowmarket’s Royal Blood’ and re-releasing their tracks Fix Me and Toxic. The tracks have a different edge to them live, they’re definitely one of the best live bands around at the moment, with such incredible stage presence. This time next year, they’ll be huge!

EEEYORE, from the outskirts of Cambridge, brought their stoner-rock sounds to their set. The quartet looked very comfortable on stage, and they’ve got a really great sound about them. Their opening track Out of Sight is such a great tune! Tonight was their first time playing at The Hunter Club, let’s hope they’re back asap!

Indie rockers The Catch closed the heat with a great set which included the likes of Artist and Tie Dye, which was premiered on the Blog earlier this week. The trio are fast becoming a huge band on the local scene and the crowd’s admiration for them was evident, culminating in a huge moshpit for set closer Vexed.

Having been judging, we only saw the last ten minutes of A Horse Called War’s set. But all we can say was that it was loud, very loud and absolutely phenomenal. They’re back at The Hunter Club on 21st April!

Track Review: The Catch – Tie Dye

The Music Blog 42 are pleased to premiere Tie Dye, the latest single from the upcoming BSE band The Catch!

Following on from their EP release 03. last year which included the phenomenal Artist and even better Vexed, The Catch are back with their rampant indie rock sounds with Tie Dye.

Tie Dye is a barnstorming two and a half minutes worth of melodic guitar riffs and powerful vocals culminating in one of the best tracks to have come out of the local scene for years. An infectious rhythm coupled in with such a catchy chorus, which sees lead vocalist Adam Levey’s voice really soar, makes this The Catch’s best song to date.

The track ticks all the boxes for an indie rock banger. Another track is set for release later in the year, we’re already buzzing to hear it!

With the band in Heat 5 of BurySOUND on 23rd February, can they follow in the footsteps of fellow indie heavyweights Suburban Minds and win? I wouldn’t bet against it after this track.
